Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from one of your ovaries, making it available for fertilization. It is the single event that determines your fertile window, and it typically occurs once per cycle. Whether you're trying to conceive, avoid pregnancy naturally, or simply understand your body better, learning to identify ovulation is a powerful skill.
Unlike a period β which announces itself clearly β ovulation can be subtle. But your body does provide reliable signals. By learning to recognize these signs, you gain insight into your reproductive health, hormonal balance, and cycle regularity.
What Is Ovulation?
During the follicular phase of your cycle, rising follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) prompts several ovarian follicles to develop. Usually, one follicle becomes dominant, growing to about 18β25 mm in diameter. When estrogen from this follicle reaches a critical threshold, it triggers a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. This LH surge causes the mature follicle to rupture approximately 24β36 hours later, releasing the egg into the fallopian tube.

Fertile-quality mucus serves an important biological function: it nourishes sperm, filters out abnormal sperm, and provides channels for sperm to swim through the cervix. The presence of egg-white mucus is a strong sign that ovulation is imminent (within 1β2 days) or occurring.
Mittelschmerz (Ovulation Pain)
Approximately 20% of women experience mittelschmerz β a German word meaning "middle pain." This is a mild to moderate one-sided lower abdominal or pelvic pain that occurs around the time of ovulation. The pain may be caused by the follicle stretching the ovary's surface before rupture, or by the small amount of fluid or blood released when the follicle bursts.
Mittelschmerz typically lasts from a few minutes to a few hours, though some women report discomfort for up to 1β2 days. The side may alternate from month to month depending on which ovary ovulates. Note that mittelschmerz is a confirming sign, not a predictive one β by the time you feel it, ovulation may already be occurring.
Other Physical Signs
Some women notice additional ovulation signs, including:
- Increased libido: A natural biological signal timed to your most fertile days
- Breast tenderness: Mild soreness due to hormonal shifts
- Light spotting: A small amount of pink or brown discharge caused by the estrogen dip at ovulation
- Heightened senses: Some women report a sharper sense of smell or taste
- Cervical position changes: The cervix becomes softer, higher, and more open around ovulation
- Bloating or pelvic fullness: Caused by fluid retention and the enlarged follicle
Hormone-Based Tracking
LH Surge Detection (Ovulation Predictor Kits)
Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the LH surge in urine. Since the LH surge typically occurs 24β36 hours before ovulation, a positive OPK gives you advance warning of your most fertile time. Most OPKs use test strips similar to pregnancy tests β you dip the strip in urine and read the result.
For best results, begin testing several days before your expected ovulation day. Test in the afternoon (between 10 AM and 8 PM) when LH levels in urine tend to be highest. Basal body temperature (BBT) is your lowest body temperature in a 24-hour period, measured immediately upon waking before any activity. How to Chart BBT
Use a basal body thermometer (accurate to 0.01Β°C) and take your temperature at the same time every morning, before getting out of bed, talking, or drinking water. Record the temperature daily on a chart or in an app like Luna. Over several cycles, you'll see a biphasic pattern: lower temperatures in the follicular phase and higher temperatures after ovulation.
Limitations of BBT
BBT confirms ovulation retroactively β the temperature rise happens after the egg is released. This means BBT alone cannot predict ovulation in advance. Factors that can affect BBT readings include illness, poor sleep, alcohol consumption, travel, and shift work. For prediction, BBT is best used in combination with other methods.
Combining Methods for Accuracy
No single method is perfect on its own, but combining multiple indicators β known as the symptothermal method β provides the highest accuracy for identifying ovulation. The ideal combination includes:
- Cervical mucus monitoring β provides early warning as mucus becomes more fertile
- LH testing β predicts ovulation 24β36 hours in advance
- BBT charting β confirms ovulation occurred after the fact
- Physical symptom awareness β mittelschmerz, cervical position, libido changes
When used together, these methods create a comprehensive picture of your fertility. Cervical mucus alerts you that ovulation is approaching, LH strips narrow the timing, and BBT confirms it happened.
